The theatrical and psychological distortions of Ballen’s pictures fit that sort of dissociation perfectly, with their deranged scrawls, unsettling clutter straight out of a Joel-Peter Witkin tableau, and dark lines that draw your attention from one unexpected juxtaposition to the next.
